Healthy Eating to Promote Improved Oral Health
As a dentist in Lakeland, FL, nothing makes me happier than strolling through a farmer’s market and running into patients who are making healthy choices for their oral health and wellness.
Here are just a few examples of healthy foods you might find at Downtown Lakeland Farmers Curb Market:
- Carrots and Sweet Potatoes: These veggies are packed with vitamin A, which supports stronger tooth enamel.
- Green Leafy Veggies: These veggies are a triple threat, providing folic acid, vitamins, and calcium to support stronger teeth and healthier gums.
- Celery: Celery helps pull food particles from the grooves in your teeth.
- Beans: White beans, lentils, and soybeans are loaded with phosphate and calcium for healthier enamel
- Strawberries: Strawberries help mitigate tooth stains.
Other healthy snacks include nuts, low-fat cheese, and yogurt!

Cosmetic options that require more than one office visit include:
- Dental Veneers
- Full Smile Makeovers
- Tooth Replacement (Dental Implants)
You can start by scheduling a consultation in my dental office to learn about your candidacy and how various treatments can transform your smile.

Your Smile Checkup to Kick off Travel Season
If you’re traveling this summer, it might be a good idea to book your next comprehensive dental checkup and teeth cleaning beforehand. Traveling with a clean bill of dental health lowers your risk of tooth decay and oral infections, the latter of which can require emergency dental care.
Your checkup includes, but may not be limited to:
- A comprehensive oral exam of the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues
- A professional teeth cleaning
- An oral cancer screening
- X-rays if warranted
- A treatment plan if I find issues
Getting your checkup and teeth cleaning before you travel gives us time to address any potential issues.
Additionally, your professional teeth cleaning removes bacteria and tartar that can lead to oral health conditions, such as tooth decay, gingivitis, and tooth infections. The cleaning gives you a clean palate to kick off the travel season.
At-Home Oral Hygiene and Care
Oral health is always a group effort. It comes down to:
- Regular checkups and teeth cleanings every six months
- Excellent oral hygiene between these checkups and cleanings
- A healthy diet that promotes tooth health and general wellness
Between checkups and teeth cleanings in Lakeland, I recommend:
- Brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily.
- Eating a diet rich in fresh veggies and fresh water.
- Avoiding sugary and acidic foods and drinks, such as fruit juice
When brushing your teeth, always spend at least two minutes and clean all sides of every tooth. Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and employ a circular motion that includes the gums.
When flossing your teeth, always use fresh sections of the string as you move along to avoid spreading debris (rather than clearing it).
Always call my dental office if you have questions or concerns about your oral health or if you notice oral changes, such as sores that don’t heal, ongoing tooth sensitivity, or bleeding gums when brushing and flossing.
