A DDS and a DMD are essentially the same thing, but with different titles. Don’t let the differences fool you, as both mean that the dentist completed coursework and graduated from a legitimate dental school. The DDS title stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery, and the DMD title stands for Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine. Both degrees entail the same education.
A DDS or DMD degree involves the standard four years of an undergraduate degree, and then another four years of dental school. This is for general dentistry. Some specialities, like pediatric dentistry, require a multi-year residency. After dental school, dentists have to pass a national written exam, along with a state or regional clinical licensing exam, in order to actually practice dentistry.
Our Dentist’s Qualifications
The team at Quality Dental Care in Lakeland, FL, is led by two dentists. Dr. Vernon Smith, DMD, completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida. He then earned his Doctorate in Dental Medicine and began his career working in central Florida, and eventually purchased Quality Dental Care in 2016. He believes that dentistry should be individualized, not one-size-fits-all. Every patient should get treatment that works for their specific needs.
Dr. Mohammad Zaman, DDS, received his dental degree from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1999. He followed up his dental degree with a one-year dental internship, after which he did a four-year residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. After being granted a Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and passing the associated exam, he also completed a three-year postgraduate degree in prosthodontics at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Zaman is dedicated to giving his patients quality dental care.
